Promote learning: We all know about it but what do we do to promote it effectively? Give freedom to the kids to do their own stuff and even if they make mistakes, it is OK. This will have the effect of the kids to be more confident, more innovative, and have fun at the same time.
Give every team a name: Make small teams from among the players for its convenient management. Also it is a great idea to give names to the teams as this inculcates a sense of association.
Measure success and failures: To coach youth soccer, you must have a definitive yardstick to measure the performance. One of the yardsticks could be an observation of whether the kids are having fun in training sessions. Are the kids enjoying soccer or playing as a team? Are the players learning the skill of passing, dribbling, and dealing with the ball?
Give rewards: Rewards encourage the new as well as skilled players in the same way. Now, these need not be substantive incentives. For instance awarding the winner team with an hour’s additional break or leaving early for the day. Also, stay away from rewarding individual acts. They do not work in soccer as some kids will always excel whereas others won't. In its place, reward entire team’s efforts.
Managing poor performance: It’s important in teaching soccer to carefully manage individual’s poor performance affecting the entire team. For example, confront the player who regularly comes late for the sessions. Have him perform a simple act as a punishment to make others aware of such mistakes.
Similar is the case with parents, some of which may try to interfere a lot in the affairs of the team. Control it in time and notify everyone about it. You must take the decisions being the coach of the team. That said, parents involvement to a certain degree is absolutely essential.
Be a leader: Whatever you do is likely to be imitated by your players because a coach is always looked upon as a mentor. So you better mend your ways. Make sure you behave properly with everyone including your team-mates, rival team, and fellow coaches. Make it to the practice ground earlier than the players. While practicing, avoid passing judgments on the players or the referee.
